Neon Blitz Scoring & Combos

A higher score comes from steady eliminations and staying alive, not just choosing the hardest mode. Build your combo, protect clean waves, and know which rewards your multipliers actually affect.

The high-score priority

Keep a safe escape route while your weapons auto-fire. Consecutive enemy eliminations build a combo up to ×20, increasing both elimination and survival points. A risky pickup or near miss can cost that combo and your perfect-wave bonus if you take damage. New to the controls? Start with how to play Neon Blitz, or play a run now.

How enemy points are calculated

Each enemy has a base value. On an elimination, your combo increases first; the reward then uses that new combo:

Enemy points = base value × combo after the elimination × difficulty factor × active score power-up factor, rounded down.

Base values before any multipliers
EnemyBase points
Chaser80
Interceptor110
Tank260
Splitter180
Sniper220
Teleporter230
Orbiter180
Mine layer260
Shielded unit290
Swarm55
Kamikaze160

Later waves do not directly multiply these base values. A tougher enemy is not automatically worth more than another enemy of the same type.

Worked example: three chasers

Start at ×1 on Arcade, with no score power-up. Eliminate three chasers without damage or combo decay. The first pays 80 × 2 = 160 points, the second 80 × 3 = 240, and the third 80 × 4 = 320: 720 elimination points in total. Survival and any near-miss points are separate.

Building, losing, and preserving a combo

  • Build: a run starts at ×1. Each enemy elimination adds 1, up to ×20, and refreshes a three-second grace period. Even at the cap, another elimination refreshes that timer.
  • Decay: after three seconds without an elimination, the combo falls at 3 multiplier units per second of active play, stopping at ×1. It does not instantly reset when the timer expires.
  • Damage: a hit that removes a life immediately resets the combo to ×1 and ends the grace period. It does not subtract points already earned.
  • Protection: hits blocked by an active shield or temporary invulnerability do not reset the combo or spoil the no-damage wave bonus.
  • Other events: near misses, boss defeats, and wave clears do not add to the combo or refresh its timer. A wave transition does not explicitly reset it; normal decay still applies. Pausing freezes the game timers.

During decay, the underlying combo can be fractional. The HUD displays it rounded down. Enemy and survival rewards use the underlying value before rounding the final points down; near-miss rewards use the rounded-down combo.

Points beyond enemy eliminations

Survival

Each second of active play awards 12 × current combo × difficulty factor, rounded down. On Arcade at an exact ×10 combo, that is 120 points for the tick. The score power-up does not double this reward.

Wave clears and perfect waves

Clearing Wave N awards (500 + 120 × N) × difficulty factor, rounded down. Take no life-losing damage during that wave to earn another 1,000 × N points. The perfect-wave bonus is unaffected by difficulty, combo, or the score power-up.

A wave clears when its timer has elapsed and no boss remains. Remaining regular enemies are removed without elimination points. For example, a clean Wave 5 clear on Arcade adds 1,100 + 5,000 = 6,100 points, separately from its boss reward.

Boss defeats

A boss on Wave N awards 3,000 × N × difficulty factor, rounded down. Defeat it in under 25 seconds from its arrival to multiply that reward by 1.5. At 25 seconds or longer, the normal reward applies. Combo and the score power-up do not affect boss rewards.

The Wave 5 boss on Arcade is worth 15,000 points, or 22,500 for a quick kill. Auto-fire prioritizes the boss while it is present, so concentrate on dodging and keeping your run alive rather than trying to preserve a combo through the fight.

Near misses

A close pass by an enemy awards 75 × the rounded-down combo. A near miss of a non-laser hostile projectile, including a mine, awards 55 × the rounded-down combo. Each enemy or projectile can award this once. Neither difficulty nor the score power-up scales these points. Treat them as a bonus from a safe dodge, not a reason to steer into danger.

Difficulty and power-ups: what changes the score?

The difficulty factors are Rookie ×0.85, Arcade ×1, and Nightmare ×1.4. They apply to enemy eliminations, survival ticks, boss defeats, and the basic wave-clear reward. Nightmare also has faster enemies and more boss health than Arcade. A higher factor does not guarantee a higher final score if your run ends sooner.

  • Score multiplier: doubles enemy elimination points for 10 seconds. It does not double survival, boss, wave-clear, perfect-wave, near-miss, or extra-life overflow rewards.
  • Nova bomb: rewards each regular enemy it clears as an elimination, increasing the combo for each one before calculating its points. An active score multiplier applies to those eliminations too.
  • Shield: protects your combo from damage while active. Contact with a regular enemy during the shield also awards an elimination.
  • Rapid fire, triple shot, and combat drone: help eliminate targets; they do not supply an additional score multiplier of their own. Slow motion can help you avoid damage.
  • Extra life: restores a life below the three-life cap. If one is collected while already at three lives, it instead adds a flat 1,000 points.

Power-ups activate when collected; there is no inventory to save one for a later wave. For an enemy example, a chaser eliminated at an exact ×10 combo on Nightmare with the score multiplier active pays 80 × 10 × 1.4 × 2 = 2,240 points.

Practical habits and beginner mistakes

  • Stay near useful targets without trapping yourself. Outside boss fights, auto-fire selects the nearest enemy. Long gaps between eliminations let your combo decay, but a collision costs it immediately.
  • Protect a clean wave. The perfect-wave bonus grows with the wave number. Chasing a small near-miss reward can sacrifice a much larger bonus.
  • Collect powers when the route is safe. A multiplier helps most when you can keep eliminating enemies during its active window. Do not trade a life just to reach it.
  • Do not confuse the HUD combo with a multiplier on everything. A ×20 combo does not turn a boss reward into twenty times its normal value.
  • Build consistency before raising difficulty. Practise movement on Rookie or Arcade, then compare what you can actually survive on Nightmare. Keeping a run alive opens more wave and boss rewards.
